HF vs Jersey vs Sahiwal — Which Breed is Right for Your Farm in Punjab?

HF vs Jersey vs Sahiwal — Which Breed is Right for Your Farm in Punjab?

This is the most common question we get at Pro Breed Semen Bank.

Farmers call us every week asking — "Bhai, kaun sa breed lena chahiye?" And the honest answer is: it depends. There is no single best breed. There is only the best breed for your situation.

Here is a straightforward breakdown to help you decide.

Holstein Friesian (HF)

Origin: Europe (Netherlands / Germany)
Milk yield: 20–35 litres per day (with good feed and management)
Fat content: 3.5–4%

Best for farmers who:

  • Have access to good quality feed and green fodder year-round

  • Can invest in proper housing with shade and fans in summer

  • Want maximum milk production

  • Are near a dairy cooperative or bulk buyer who pays by volume

Be careful if:

  • Your area has extreme summer heat (above 42°C regularly)

  • Water supply is uncertain

  • Feed costs are high and margins are tight

HF cows are high performers but high maintenance. They reward good management and punish neglect.

Jersey

Origin: Jersey Island (UK)
Milk yield: 15–25 litres per day
Fat content: 4.5–5.5% (highest of the three)

Best for farmers who:

  • Sell milk to dairies that pay by fat percentage (many private dairies do)

  • Have moderate feed availability

  • Operate in hilly or semi-arid areas

  • Want a smaller, easier-to-handle animal

Be careful if:

  • Your buyer pays flat rate per litre regardless of fat — Jersey's advantage disappears

Jersey cows are more adaptable than HF, handle heat slightly better, and their high-fat milk fetches better prices from certain buyers. A smart choice if you know your milk market.

Sahiwal

Origin: Punjab / Pakistan border region — this is our native breed
Milk yield: 10–16 litres per day
Fat content: 4.5–5%

Best for farmers who:

  • Want a low-input, highly resilient animal

  • Have limited access to quality feed or veterinary care

  • Face extreme summer heat regularly

  • Are in remote areas far from cold-chain infrastructure

  • Want a dual-purpose animal (milk + draught)

Be careful if:

  • You need high daily volumes for bulk supply contracts

Sahiwal is criminally underrated. It survives conditions that would destroy an imported breed. Tick resistance, heat tolerance, lower feed requirement — and it still gives respectable fat-rich milk. For small farmers in difficult conditions, Sahiwal is often the smarter long-term choice.

What We Recommend at PBSB

If you are near a well-managed dairy cooperative with good infrastructure — HF crossbred (HF x Sahiwal or HF x Tharparkar) gives you the best of both: decent yield with better adaptability than pure HF.

If your feed situation is uncertain or you are just starting out — Jersey or Sahiwal will give you more stable returns with less risk.

We stock high-quality semen for all three breeds from certified Grade A and Grade B companies. Call us and we will help you choose based on your specific farm conditions — not just what is popular.
